CHARACTER STUFF
Name: Yoshiya “Joshua” Kiryu
Aliases: The Composer
Canon: http://twewy.wikia.com/wiki/Joshua
Role: Antagonistic D-bag
Species: Reaper (Former Human)
Gender: Male
Age: 16 upon death, 2 years as a Reaper, and currently 18 total years
Appearance: http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100317015428/twewy/images/a/a2/Joshua_Artwork_1.jpg
Origin story:
Overall, Joshua had always found his life to be rather dull, uneventful and devoid of any real meaning. His classes were easy and unengaging, whereas his peers generally avoided him due to his snobby attitude. Throughout his entire 16 years of life, he never forged a real friendship with anyone his own age, and felt largely out of place. But what really set him apart from everyone else, was his ability to see the dead.
Though he couldn’t interact with any of the departed that he saw, he could still hear whatever they said. None of this would change until the sudden, tragic accident that put an end to Joshua’s own life…Except that for him, it would turn out to be anything but tragic.
Immediately upon his death, Joshua would wake up in “Limbo”, known to the locals as the Underground (or UG for short). He would find himself with the chance to participate in the “Reaper’s Game” - a part survival game, and part competition where the winner would be offered a second chance at life. The prize was one that Joshua deemed unappealing – knowing that all that awaited him in life was returning to more of the same. But this game was something that presented him with both intrigue and opportunity. Rather than participate as a player, he joined the ranks of the game’s operators – the reapers. In doing so, he was tasked with the duty of eliminating players alongside his new co-workers.
Reapers stand to gain from eradicating as many players as they can. In doing so, they earn more “points”, and therefore a longer “lifespan” and greater power. The more they accomplish, the faster they can rise through the rankings.
Joshua had retained some previous knowledge of the Reaper’s Game from seeing players while he was alive, which aided him in his efforts as a new reaper. And previous knowledge aside, he was quick to adapt to his new work environment – earning a record-breaking number of points in his first year. By the end of his second year, Joshua was awarded the rank of Composer for the Los Angeles area, becoming the “youngest” reaper to ever achieve this position. As Composer, Joshua is able to alter the rules for the Reaper’s Game in his designated area and dictate the actions of the other reapers working under him. He was responsible for adding components to the game such as allowing players to shop in the “real world” for items to help them in the game.
In his first year as Composer, Joshua began to notice that there was a power imbalance due to an influx of players already possessing superhuman powers. The very idea of humans having these abilities was one that already disgusted him – believing that all people are ultimately corrupt and unable to change.
Joshua had originally planned to launch an assault on the RG super-powered community of Los Angeles, although his idea was met with vigorous opposition by his second-in-command; his Conductor. The Conductor had persuaded him to postpone his decision, and proposed a wager. The deal would be this – Joshua would first choose a proxy to grant power to. Next, they would observe this individual’s development after receiving the power, and watch if they progressed into a “hero” or a “villain” type of role. This proxy’s actions would be the final factor in Joshua’s stance on the matter.
For his proxy, he made sure to choose one of the “worst” possible people in Los Angeles – in this case, Neku Sakuraba. He decided to grant Neku a set amount of time to adjust to his powers, and has finally decided to pay the RG a visit and see his proxy’s progression first hand.
Personality:
Joshua’s always had a largely negative view of humanity as a whole, and his experiences in both life and death only added to this outlook. He believes that people are ultimately corrupt, selfish, and unable to change themselves for the better. These views have had an obvious impact on his behavior towards other people, and he largely comes off as acting superior or antagonistic. He can be accurately described as snobby, condescending, and arrogant.
Despite his age, Joshua is far from immature and is, in fact, highly intelligent. He often keeps his true feelings or intentions to himself – quick to tease anyone who asks, and never easily giving any straight answers regardless. It’s also rather difficult to get Joshua genuinely worked up over anything, and even if he seems upset, he’s usually faking it.
Differences from canon:
Joshua is closer to the age he appears to be in this AU, and therefore much younger than he is in canon. He is also considerably less powerful in the living world, and has very limited use of his abilities.
Power level: C in the living world
Powers:
Summon Noise: Noise are a type of creature who’s soul can be bound in a pin and summoned into a physical form by the owner of the pin. They take on the forms of animals, such as wolves, bears, sharks, elephants, or even mythical creatures such as dragons. One characteristic that all noise have in common is a tattoo-like pattern that replaces a part of their body – namely the one they use for offense.
Create Walls: A “wall” is essentially an invisible barrier that Joshua can put up. The barrier must connect at two different points (an example would be from one building to another) in order to form, so it cannot be used in open spaces. The walls would be useful in escape or misdirection, as only Joshua has the ability to “open” them. If he does not return to open the walls, they will automatically vanish by the next day.
Psychokinesis: Although this power is much more limited outside of the UG, Joshua is able to lift objects as large as cars and throw/drop them wherever he chooses.
Plane Shift: The ability to move back and forth between the Underground and the living world. In addition, since Joshua cannot be “killed”, if he is injured badly enough, he will be sent back to the UG instead. If this happens, he will not be able to return to the RG until he has recovered.
Synchronization: Joshua is able to form a connection with another person whose powers diverge from his own (examples would be other reapers under his command or humans he’s granted power to). This connection allows the two individuals to share their powers and perform combined “fusion” attacks, which vary depending on the other’s abilities.
Team affiliation: Trailblazers eventually (but as a cover)
First person sample:
(The following is a 3 year old Yelp review on a Ramen shop which, at the time, had only recently opened.)
A Fair Warning to Fellow Ramen Lovers
Like many of my neighbors, I was overjoyed to hear the news of a ramen shop opening up just around the corner. The convenient location and the company’s claims of “authenticity” sounded promising, so I made sure to book reservations on the day of shop’s grand opening. And here, you see, is where the trouble began.
Even though I’d made reservations a week in advance, I was still forced to wait for a table. I was there for a good sixteen minutes, without any seating I might add, until I was finally given a spot. However, I’m still able to forgive a blunder like this on a busy day…if the food is worth the wait.
Sadly, I can assure you that what I found was anything but “authentic”. I was hard pressed to find any of the classics available on the menu, and the house special I ordered still somehow managed to lack any real originality. The selected ingredients seemed to serve no purpose other than to overwhelm the tastebuds and prevent the meal from coming together as a whole. In fact, the different flavors only seemed to clash against one another rather than work together. All in all, the experience was lacking and it left me feeling rather disappointed.
Was it a step above instant noodles? Yes. But do you really want to be spending your money on food where the quality is just above “good enough”? I know I don’t. And for the prices they’re charging, you’re better off traveling those extra miles to a store that actually knows its way around its own profession.
